Those of you that know About Face Skin Care know that we do not move quickly when it comes to bringing on new treatments. We wait for the kinks to be worked out. We wait to make sure that customers are seeing proven results in other practices. And, most importantly, we make sure the treatment is safe. We are excited to say that Collagen Induction Therapy lived up to our standards!

Collagen and elastin are the support systems of the skin. Collagen, which acts as the structural support, and elastin, which gives our skin its elasticity, are starting to decline in the human body by the mid 30’s. When this happens, skin becomes less supple and fine lines and creases begin to form. Lips look less full, small pleats begin to form around the lips, crinkled skin forms under the eyes and deeper creases are soon noted to the naso-labial folds and forehead.

Collagen Induction Therapy, or CIT, utilizes tiny needles to make micro openings in the top layer of skin, thus stimulating the lower layers to produce more collagen and elastin. Just as you have to stress muscle fibers to build more muscle, this stress on the lower layers of skin will stimulate the body to self-repair with more structural support. These tiny channels also allow products applied to the surface to penetrate deep into the skin to heal the effects of aging much more quickly. The effect is thicker dermal and epidermal tissue with less creases, smoother color and tighter pores.

A consultation is done at the first CIT appointment to determine course of treatment and to discuss specifics of post care in detail to assure that the client has no previous history of keloid scarring or allergies to metals or numbing agents (“Caine” medications). Topical anesthetic is then applied over the face to ensure the treatment is painless. CIT takes about an hour to complete. The skin is red after the procedure and will clear in approximately two to five days. The feeling and appearance mimics a sunburn. The procedure is typically repeated every two to three weeks for a total of six. Results are noted within the first two weeks, but will continue to improve for up to a year.

I have personally been very impressed with the results noted to the skin directly beneath the eyes and the crow’s feet area. Forehead creases and droopy eyes also seem to respond well. And my personal favorite is the results seen around the mouth and the dreaded smoker’s lines. (By the way, everyone gets these!! Even if you never looked at a cigarette or straw in your life, you are not immune!)

In addition to treating fine lines and wrinkles, CIT is also an excellent treatment option for firming skin, treating brown spots, smoothing acne scars and stretch marks. It is touted as a great alternative to or enhancement for Botox® and injectable fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane®.
