The double chin can be a nemesis. Clients of all ages, genders, and ethnicities have sought my assistance for years to help with this area, and there has been little to truly make a difference. Thankfully, we have a wonderful new option that has helped us provide smiling faces and thin chins at About Face Skin Care.
Kybella is a manmade form of a substance the body produces to absorb fats that are consumed. This substance is called deoxycholic acid. This synthetic form of the acid was FDA approved last year to treat the under chin area where it impressed over 80% of those treated in reducing the size of the injected area. In the time that we have been using the treatment, we have seen incredible results and clients who are thankful to finally address this stubborn problem. When Kybella is injected, it will destroy the fat cell by “popping” it open like a water balloon. Once the cell membrane has been disrupted, the fat cell releases its contents that are removed by the body and eliminated as normal waste.
Before treatment, the client will be examined to ensure they are good candidates for Kybella. The area is numbed with a topical numbing solution and ice is applied to further numb the internal tissues.
Dots are temporarily placed on the skin to make injections easier and more accurate for the provider. Clients report very little discomfort and the entire procedure takes only about 15 minutes.
Patients will experience swelling in this area immediately after the injection that typically lasts about 48 hours, but may last longer. The area will feel numb and firm as the fat cells are dying. These symptoms will resolve soon. Two to four treatments are typically needed, but since the results are curative (something we can rarely say in this industry), clients can take some time to decide if more than two treatments are needed. Appointments are typically scheduled six to eight weeks apart and side effects seemed to be lessened after the first treatment.
Another big plus to Kybella- the skin of the lower face and jawline retracts to make a smoother and tighter appearance. This has been a wonderful side benefit for men and women alike.
On a personal note, I had reservations about Kybella. I talked with Dr. Hupman and officials at Allergan at length before trying the product. I have to say that I have only positive things to report about my experience and the experience of my peers who are using the product. This has been a very nice addition to our anti-aging arsenal.
