Juvéderm® is a soft tissue filler or dermal filler that is made out of “sugar gels”. Sugar gels are repeating units of hyaluronic acid sugar. The hyaluronic acid sugar gels have become the most commonly injected filler product in the world. The reason they are so commonly injected is that they are well tolerated by the body and the longevity of the product.

How is Juvéderm® injected?

Juvéderm® comes in a variety of product types. Juvéderm® Voluma™ is the largest and most highly-cross-linked of the Juvéderm® family and it will last up to two years. Juvéderm® Voluma™ is often used for large volume contour restorations such as the temporal hollow, cheek arch and cheekbone, under the eye and jawline. In addition, Voluma™ may be used in the lips and sometimes even to contour the nose. The Juvederm injection is performed with a small, blunt micro-cannula. All injection specialists at About Face Skin Care are highly-trained and experienced. About Face Skin Care is a Platinum Plus Allergan Provider. This means that our practice is the top 10% of all U.S. practices in terms of volume.

The blunt micro-cannula is introduced under the skin and most injections are performed along the surface of the bone, when shaping the face, or directly under then skin when correcting deep lines and furrows. Juvéderm® Voluma™, as well as its sister products Juvéderm® Ultra Plus™ and Juvéderm® Plus™, have lidocaine or local anaesthetic already mixed in, thus, while the injection is proceeding, anaesthesia is also being instilled.

Who is a candidate for Juvéderm® soft tissue filler injections?

Candidates for Juvéderm® injections are those individuals who have lost some of the volume and proportion of their face or back of their hands either because of age, or those individuals who are highly-animated and have deep lines and furrows. Juvederm soft tissue filler candidates also include those who would like larger facial proportions than they inherited, such as a different-shaped nose or more aesthetically-pleasing lip or jawline contours. Juvéderm® products, such as Juvéderm® Voluma™, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus™ and Juvéderm® Plus™ are expertly employed in the areas where they may be indicated. A good candidate for Juvéderm® soft tissue filler and dermal filler is realistic about the type of smoothing, youth, volume and shape that can be achieved with a simple soft tissue filler. Often good candidates will undergo combination therapy at About Face Skin Care with BOTOX®, Fractional lasers and IPL FotoFacical RF and IPL Photofacial colour correction and lasers.

Contraindications to Juvéderm® injections would be allergic reaction to Juvéderm® in the past, which is exceedingly rare and usually due to the cross-linking material rather than the Juvéderm® itself. Other contraindications would be patients who might be pregnant or patients with inflammation, infection or skin cancer in the area of injection. Is the Juvéderm® soft tissue filler injection painful?

The Juvéderm® products are mixed with xylocaine and local anaesthesia and, as such, they are very comfortable and tolerable procedures. How long does the Juvéderm® soft tissue filler injection take?

The Juvéderm® injection procedure takes approximately 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the amount of product injected and the areas it is injected.

How long is the recovery following a Juvéderm® soft tissue filler and dermal filler injection?

The recovery following a Juvéderm® soft tissue filler or dermal filler injection depends upon the areas injected and the amount of products injected, as well as the patient and age of the patient. Individuals who have not been taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories leading up to the procedure generally have minimal swelling, especially with the blunt, micro-tip cannula technique, as the blunt micro-tip cannula tends not to disrupt small vessels and veins that lead to bruising. There’s a modest degree of swelling and depending on the number of syringes and areas injected, most patients can return to work the next day.

What kind of results can I expect with my Juvéderm® soft tissue filler injection?

Depending on the number of syringes, a patient can be satisfied with having a refreshed look or be brought to full correction. Combining soft tissue fillers with other services (combination therapy), patients in their 40’s & older can often look 8 – 10 years younger.

What are patients saying about their Juvéderm® injections at About Face Skin Care?

About Face Skin Care soft tissue filler and dermal filler injection patients are generally extremely happy. About Face Skin Care has been injecting soft tissue fillers for well over ten years. Well over 90% of all soft tissue filler injection patients return to About Face Skin Care over and over again as they know they are receiving the artistry and expertise that leaves their face looking natural and attractive rather than overinjected and thus avoiding the dreaded “filler face”. You can find soft tissue filler and Juvéderm® injection practices anywhere, but very few, if any, have the overall artistry and expertise of About Face Skin Care.

How long will the results of my Juvéderm® last?

Depending on the product used, the results of Juvéderm® injection may last up to two years. Juvéderm® Voluma™ is the longest-lasting Juvéderm® product and is often used for volume shaping of the face, hands and volumization of the lips. In general, most patients get volume shaping once a year and return for re-injection every 12 to 14 months to maintain the optimal soft tissue proportion, shape and smoothness.

Is there any maintenance required?

Soft tissue fillers and facial shape and proportion in general are a temporary thing. As we age, there are enzymes that break down our normal collagen and elastin as well as the hyaluronic acid sugar gels. Hyaluronidases are natural degradation sugar enzymes inside our bodies and cells will break down the Juvéderm® product over time. Thus, most patients who enjoy nice post-soft tissue Juvéderm® contour and shape will return once a year to once every year-and-a-half for volumization and restoration. Highly-animated areas, such as the lips, tend not to last as long as un-animated areas and require re-injection sooner.
