Kybella® is an injectable treatment that is made of deoxycholic acid, which is the chemical the body uses to break down fat.  When KybellaÒ is injected into the tissue, it will cause the fat cell to blow up like a balloon and pop, a process known as apoptosis.  KybellaÒ was originally introduced to break down the double chin area, but is now known to be a great tool in pockets of unwanted fat on other areas of the body, such as inner thighs, “bra fat”, and inner knees.

Who should not receive Kybella®?

We would avoid doing a KybellaÒ treatment on skin that exhibits signs of infection.  Since there is typically swelling after the treatment, it is recommended to schedule the treatment when you have no important social obligations for the next few days.

What will we discuss before the Kybella® treatment?

Your provider will talk with you to see if you have had or plan to have any surgical treatments on your face, neck or chin to make sure we are aware of any irregularities or scar tissue in the treatment area.  We would also need to be aware of any medical conditions in or near the neck area.  If you are on blood thinners, there is an increased risk of bruising in the area.  If you have had or have trouble swallowing, we would need to have further discussion.  The swelling after Kybella does not typically cause swallowing issues, but we would not want to exacerbate a pre-existing condition. If you are pregnant or breast feeding, we would delay treatment until after you deliver or are finished breast feeding.  We would need to discuss your medications and supplements to make sure there are no interactions or increased risk of bruising.

What are the possible side effects of Kybella®?

Kybella® can cause side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause a temporary uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.  We have been trained in assessment methods to avoid these issues.

The most common side effects of Kybella® include: swelling, bruising, discomfort, numbness, redness, and areas of temporary firmness in the treatment area.
